wp-container-core-group-is-layout-fc911b07 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Ausstellung DISPOSSESSION stellt eine Frage, die auch unmittelbar die K\u00fcnstlervereinigung und ihr historisches Ausstellungshaus, das K\u00fcnstlerhaus betrifft. Diese Frage kreist um das Selbstverst\u00e4ndnis einer Kunstinstitution, die seit ihrer Gr\u00fcndung Kriterien entwickelte, die die Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit zur Standesvertretung regelte. Eingesetzt von staatlicher Stelle um die Frage, wer, warum, Kunst machte, handhabbar zu regeln, konnte sie Privilegien, Vorschl\u00e4ge f\u00fcr Professuren, Stipendien, Preise und gro\u00dfe staatliche Auftr\u00e4ge vergeben. Es oblag der Institution und ihren jeweiligen Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten, die Zugeh\u00f6rigkeit selbst immer wieder zu definieren und zu exekutieren. So waren Frauen in den Statuten nicht ausgeschlossen, ihnen ihre Eignung als K\u00fcnstlerin abzusprechen wurde 100 Jahre lang dennoch intern argumentiert, wie man in den Sitzungsprotokollen anhand jedes Aufnahmegesuchs von Frauen nachlesen kann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In der Geschichte des Hauses mit seinen Ehrengerichtsverfahren und Gremien stellt der Ausschluss aller j\u00fcdischen Mitglieder 1938 keinen institutionellen, jedoch einen gro\u00dfen inhaltlichen Bruch mit den immer wieder betonten Paradigmen der Kameradschaftlichkeit und Solidarit\u00e4t dar. Ohne dokumentiertes Bedauern wurde ein Drittel aller Mitglieder ihren, teilweise direkt in die Vernichtungslager f\u00fchrenden, Schicksalen \u00fcberlassen. Der Eindruck dr\u00e4ngt sich auf, dass sich die Mehrzahl der K\u00fcnstler ob der neuen M\u00f6glichkeiten freuten, auch zeigt die fast voreilige Durchsetzung des Ausschlusses, dass diesem Geist bereits \u00fcber lange Jahre zugearbeitet worden war. Nach dem Ende der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft in \u00d6sterreich gibt es jedenfalls keine nachlesbaren Bem\u00fchungen sich nach dem Verbleib und dem Befinden der Ausgeschlossenen auch nur zu erkundigen, geschweige denn, diesen Ausschluss aufzuarbeiten. Die beschworene Solidarit\u00e4t richtet sich stattdessen auf Hilfestellungen f\u00fcr die bekannten und nun nicht mehr so offen agierenden Profiteure einer nationalsozialistischen Kunstpraxis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dieses tr\u00fcbe Bild erscheint nur solange generisch, solange man in ihm nicht auch die Behauptung eines K\u00fcnstlerbilds sieht, das die gesamte Nachkriegsgeschichte bis heute durchzieht. Die konsequente Diffamierung von &#8220;amateurhaften&#8221;, &#8220;dilettantischen&#8221; &#8220;Kritzelvereinen&#8221; zugunsten eines m\u00e4nnlich heroischen Einzelk\u00fcnstlers vor dessen Augen Landschaft, nackte Frauen und heroische M\u00e4nner zum gestaltbaren Material wird, durchzieht nicht nur die Dokumente der K\u00fcnstlerhaus Vereinigung, sondern auch unsere von ihm ausgestaltete Umwelt: in den Sammlungen der Stadt, auf ihren \u00f6ffentlichen Pl\u00e4tzen und Fassaden ihrer H\u00e4user. Possession, and even more importantly, the idea of being possessed, is missing in it. National Socialism, like any right-wing movement, was obsessed with categorising people. It defined attributions such as \u201cJewish\u201d, \u201chomosexual\u201d, or \u201casocial\u201d down to the last degrading detail. What was not \u201cnormal\u201d was dismis\u00adsed as \u201cdegenerate\u201d. It reduced women to their reproductive function and was obsessed with the concept of race and the ideology of characteristics attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people described in this way share the fact that they themselves were not given a say in the definition that devalued them. The actual purpose of this categorising description was to take something away from the people de\u00adscribed by it. The exhibition argues against the notion of possessing qualities that result from external ascriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The artists Linda Bilda, Stephan Janitzky, Anita Leisz, Henrik Olesen, Arye Wachsmuth, and the historian Sophie Lillie were invited to take part in this exhibition because they have been working for years on the complex issue of identi\u00adty attribution, the aim of which is to fix, devalue, and thus dispossess individuals. The works were not created with a history of the K\u00fcnstlerhaus in mind. Instead, they show very different ways of approaching it altogether. In doing so, they indicate that there are other logics than those conveyed by the surviving documents from this time, since these are also always part of what they describe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second part asks what kind of representation the K\u00fcnstlerhaus provided for its members, and how much the reactionary socio-political orientation of this artists\u2019 association has influenced our image of art. All one really has to do is walk through Vienna with open eyes. There is hardly an official administrative building, church, or state opera curtain in which a member of the K\u00fcnstlerhaus was not involved. The K\u00fcnstlerhaus had the power to exclude artists from this canon from commissions, orders, professorships, support, recognition, backing, practical help, and income \u2013 and did. Richard Apflauer, Theodor Bruckner, Jehudo Epstein, Hilda Goldwag, Sofie Korner, Gerda Matej\u00adka-Felden, Teresa Feodorowna Ries, and the collector Marco Birnholz were involved with the K\u00fcnstlerhaus, but were either consistently excluded from membership or whose already-granted membership was later revoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This desolidarisation extended far into the post-war period and thus also had an impact on the presence of these artists in today\u2019s public collections. Only very few works by these artists have survived. Dispossession now shows excerpts of some of these works in an exhibition presented by the very institution that abandoned the people who created them and was wholly unconcerned about their fate during
